Race Story - Continued from Front Page
Shaffer drove around Rob Chaney on the fifth lap and
then withstood several cautions and a fuel stop to claim his seventh 410
sprint car win of 2009 aboard the Aaron Call/Janet Holbrook owned #83. The
previous night at EldoraSpeedway, the Kistler Racing Engines, J&J Chassis,
Hoosier Tires backed car experienced some mechanical difficulties that the
team worked hard to overcome.
"Brian (Kemenah, crew
chief) and guys gave me a great race car. Kistler,
J&J, VRP Shocks, Hoosier Tires...just everything fell into place tonight.
That was just a great car to drive," said Shaffer, the current O'Reilly
All Star Circuit of Champions point leader.
"Last night was just part of this game...one night you're down and
the
next night you're on top. You just never know. I have great owners and great
people behind me in Aaron Call and Janet Holbrook...just the whole team
has been really awesome," added Shaffer, who at this time last year had just
lost his World of Outlaws ride and by the end of Speedweek became the
driver of the Call Motorsports car. "That's part of this game too...one
night you
have a ride and the next you're looking. It just turned out the timing was
right and I hooked up with Brian and we clicked right off the bat and it
just keeps getting better and better.
The start of the 30-lap feature was an omen of bad things to come, as
Daron Clayton got upside down on the start. Once the green flew, fast
qualifier
Rob Chaney bolted into the lead with third starting Shaffer sliding into
second while Brock Mayes, Brandon Wimmer, Randy Hannagan and Paul McMahan
staged a torrid battle for third. Shaffer would execute his winning move
in turns three and four coming down to complete the fifth circuit.
The first of several cautions would fly on lap six for Wimmer's
stalled
machine. That was followed a lap later for a Dale Blaney, Danny Smith
spin. Once the green flew again, Shaffer pulled away while Chaney had his
hands
full with Brock Mayes, Hannagan and a fast Greg Wilson. Another caution
would fly on lap 11 for a stalled Kenny Jacobs, followed by another yellow
a lap later for Cale Conley. Another lap and another caution as Terry McCarl
and Chad Kemenah stopped with flat left front tires.
On the lap 14 restart, Shaffer again pulled away while Chaney now had to
contend with Hannagan while Wilson moved into fourth. Another caution
would come out on lap 18 for a stalled Lee Jacobs. Several drivers were
reporting problems with their one-way radios and would not fall into line
which
prompted a stoppage on lap 18 for fuel.
The race would then go the remaining 12 laps under green with Shaffer
setting a torrid pace. Meanwhile, the fans were treated to a great battle
for second as Chaney and Hannagan ran side-by-side for next eight laps
before Hannagan would take the runner-up spot on lap 28. At the checkered
Shaffer won by six car lengths over Hannagan, Chaney, Wilson and Stevie
Smith.
"We struggled early this year, but Dave (Jessup) and I are really
beginning to communicate and we're figuring this thing out and the results
are
starting to show that," said Chaney of his third place run aboard the
Triple A Auto Club, Lonestar Pawn Shop backed #7K.
In the 25-lap 305 sprint feature, Todd Heuerman also put on a dominating
performance, leading all 25 laps for his second career Millstream victory.
However, Heuerman did have a very close call late in the race, as he
brushed the outside retaining wall with three laps remaining, but gathered
it back
in to go on to the win.
"I don't know what it is...it seems we can come here and do about anything
and it works. That makes it easy," said Heuerman beside his P.W.
Chamberlin Trucking, Schroeder Plastering and Drywall, Sam Gerdeman
Construction,
Denny Niese Transportation backed sprinter. "If I didn't hit it just right
you
could drift up there pretty easy...I just stood on the gas and hoped if I
hit it I could just bounce off of it.
While Heuerman was on cruise control up front, Kevin Lee, Paul Weaver and
Stuart Brubaker put on a terrific battle for second. At the checkered,
Weaver finished in the runner-up spot with Brubaker claiming third, 17th
starter Chad Wilson would ride home fourth and Lee would round out the top
five.
